Hell's Kitchen Redeemed

Okay--this slack was my fault--but after this Cleaning Club--the Shannon family got a wicked bad stomach flu, and then another round of sickness, and then the fussiest period of Michael's life.

This week we gave my kitchen a very thorough cleaning. We moved and scrubbed all of the appliances. Cleaned all the cabinets. Scoured the sink. Shined the faucet and knobs. We even hit some base board action. It's one of those jobs which doesn't need to be done too often, but which I never on my own seem to get to.

So without anymore freakin' ado---here is the photo fest from that day way back many weeks ago.

We Clean High and Low

underneath the cabinet- yuck!

I had to come up with a project for CC in a hurry this week, because Shannon's hubby was home from work sick and she thought it would be better not to have the Club descend on their home when he needed to rest. So we looked around and found a few things that were in need of some work.

We settled on this little cabinet to start with. The picture at the top of the page is the view underneath (yuck!) and as you can see, the cabinet was such a mess inside that the door wouldn't even close properly. I wanted to clear it out and put back only the basic drawing and coloring supplies, so that we could easily get to them.

So Rachel fished for lost treasure with a yard stick,

And we sorted through all the papers and old coloring books in the cabinet.

Of course, Michael was close at hand barking out orders and trying to keep us slackers in line.

It wasn't long before the shelves were wiped out and we were putting things back into place. A quick and easy project! But one that will make a HUGE difference in our day to day lives. When we have drawing supplies within easy reach, it provides a quick and easy activity and helps transition us from one thing to the next. All 4 of my kids love to draw so much, and this makes it so much easier.

After we had some lunch, we checked my list and decided to tackle the other job I had written down, which was to clear the tops of my kitchen cabinets. This may not be a problem area for some people, but at nearly 6 feet tall, I tend to stick things up there to get them out of the way or just to deal with them later. I didn't even REALLY notice how much junk was up there until we started taking it all down. In fact, I suffered from an attack of camnesia there for a minute and did not get a photo until all the stuff was actually on the countertop. I almost made Rachel put it all back up there just for the sake of the picture, but that's another good thing about working in a group- they don't let you do ridiculous things like that. (Yes, I probably would have done it if I were working alone. It's the photo-perfectionist in me. And you thought all my photos were candid! HA!)

all the stuff off the top of the cabinets

Rachel did all the dirty work this time. My hero! She got up there with the vacuum and a rag and knocked out the cleaning while Shannon and I put all the stuff where it belonged.

Michael was so proud of us, he was kicking his legs and doing cheers!

Up, up, and away!

After everyone left, I stayed in the groove and got the stove cleaned and took out the compost (both long overdue) and loaded the dishwasher. My kitchen feels so great!

Another excellent meeting of the Cleaning Club. We got a lot accomplished and had time to sit and chat too. And my family felt the difference immediately- that clutter up above our heads was weighing us down! Everything feels more balanced and I can close my little corner cabinet again, which was completely messing up the chi in my special room. Yay!

Clean Through the Chaos

Shannon working on green cabinet

Today we got together for the first time after two weeks off for holiday hootenannies and the like. Shannon triumphed over an unresponsive minivan to get her brood here, and everyone braved the below freezing temps to get here. The project: The Trifecta of Clutter. It was to be a Hat Trick of organization. But, the cool thing with Cleaning Club, is that sometimes what you think you need to do doesn't really work, but something you didn't plan on getting done does!

craft supplies

The original trilogy included a window seat filled with fabric and sewing stuff, a cabinet that held the booze and some CDs, and the coat closet. Moving the sewing stuff into the coat closet was ill conceived, it became clear, but moving the cloth napkins and candles into the cabinet (which we thinned out the booze contents of and packed up all the CDs into a box to go live in the Shed of Ick) and the drawer from which the napkins came became the third to be organized.

The coat closet got thinned out and put back together.

The cabinet was no longer an eye sore.

And the napkin drawer got trimmed within an inch of its life. (It was filled to the top previously.)

And I thought of something I love about Cleaning Club, beyond the obvious. It is this: you have to go through this storm to get to the calm seas it brings. In other words, 14 people descend on your house. 18 people need to eat lunch, so suddenly the kitchen counters become filled with food which then spills out via children into the rest of the house. It is winter, so every one of those people brings in a coat, as well as other random items (dolls, purses, books, things to return to each other, gallon bottles of gin, etc...), that create large piles. The little kids play with a pile of toys in the tiny living room. Kids are everywhere. You pull a bunch of stuff out of your closets and cabinets and whatever, so there are piles of that. And, this time, I added to it with a pile of ten trash bags full of vintage clothing (long story). In short: there is disorder everywhere, and I am a Virgo. But, you know, there is so much sweet order on the other side of it that you weather the storm. You fight the waves and navigate through the mess and the kids and it's so worth it. And you're not in a little dingy out there all alone, you're on a good rig, with a three woman crew, and you are capable of anything. And short of momentary desires to send a kid off the plank, you just keep sailing.

And then everyone collects their piles, and cleans up their lunch and their toys, and they sail their separate ways. And you're home and everything is so much better for the chaos.

There is a life lesson in that effing long ass played out metaphor.

Outreach Program

Cleaning Club Outreach!

We went and helped our friend, Sarah, get her kitchen whipped into shape at our very first session of the Cleaning Club Outreach Program! Read about the initial cleanup day on her blog, as well as her recent update about how this project has continued to bless her family. We love to see the Cleaning Club magic spread so far!

New Cups

new coffee cups

I was absolutely showered with wonderful gifts from friends this past birthday, but the ones I wanted to make sure I shared here (because I promised!) are my new coffee vessels. I showed up at cleaning club (yes, they are such a wonderful and regular part of my life that nearly every sentence I speak includes them...) the week of my birthday and was presented with not one but two new coffee mugs! Both were chosen from my friends' personal collections and have already become a welcome part of mine. Currently I am trading off between the two, and there are things I love about both. I love the size and feel of the handle on the smaller one, and I love the beauty and sturdy, non-tip base of the taller one. But best of all is that they make me smile when I use them because they make me think of my friends.

Oh and hey! If you aren't tired of hearing about it already, go on over to Shannon's blog and read about the difference the club made in her dining room recently! Hooray!

isn't it super cool when you get something that is so new and cool, and then think about how somebody else had it? it's recycling, and it's the most fun for the person who gets the gift.

The First Cleaning Club

IMG_3475.JPG

Imagine, if you will, 2 friends chatting while their combined nine children run throughout the house and yard playing happily (Well, ok. Lyle was taking a nap. So really there were only eight children frolicking about.) Then picture a very messy kitchen- the remains of a busy weekend in a household of 6- becoming a very clean kitchen.

Doesn't sound like they have anything to do with each other, do they? Ah, but they do. And it is a truly wonderful thing.

My friend Shannon came by today with her 5 kids so everyone could play, and we decided to tackle my messy kitchen together. We had talked about it before, and agreed that it is always easier and more fun to clean someone else's mess and chat while you are doing it! Of course, I didn't leave the kitchen a mess on purpose because I knew she was coming, but it just happened to be that way after a busy weekend. And I knew Jason would be thrilled to come home to a clean sink since it is his job to wash dishes. Which in turn, meant he had more time to spend with the kids this evening while I worked. And Shannon thanked me on her way out the door for "letting" her help me clean up! This is a difficult thing to hear from someone, but whenI thought about it I can relate to the good feeling I get from helping one of my mama friends out in a much needed way. It is a pleasure!

So, we've formulated a plan, and I think it's going to be brilliant. Take turns meeting at each other's home, let the kids run free, and tackle a job that needs doing. Sometimes it might be a closet or a messy bedroom, or maybe even gettting caught up on the laundry. The kids are happy, we're happy, and our husbands are sure to be happy. Team work at it's best! Thanks, Shannon, from the bottom of my heart. You ROCK!

You know- it really was a gift to me--I got to spend the rest of my day feeling like I had done a good thing, made a little impact in increasing the peace--albeit a tiny impact, though more than anything what I think makes parenting and family so dang hard is the sense of being in it all alone so much of the time. A tiny little effort for me- made my day better, and probably yours and Jason's, too! I hope you guys had a great night!! And , lol! I'll start thinking of a project here!
